Considering that the epics of Homer continue to shape the contemporary culture, this article aims to analyze the Iliad and the Odyssey in order to identify certain aspects of the characters Odysseus and Helen—albeit combined with many other elements, modern and unrelated to the Greek texts—that appear to be present in the construction of Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, the complex protagonist of Final Fantasy IX (Square, 2000). This video game represents a return to the formative themes of the Final Fantasy series. It gathers fantasy and science fiction within a narrative that appears to have been built on a framework bequeathed by the epics of Homer. The three characters will be examined comparatively. Furthermore, we shall examine the way FFIX receives and reshapes the ancient Greek texts. The possibilities opened up by games in its relation to classical literature proved to be unique. In Brazil, there are no studies on this interactional perspective.
